A SHORT HISTORY OF THE WORLD TANGO SUMMIT

Buenos Aires, as cultural capital of Latin America in the year 1992, organises a Tango Summit.  Two years later and now with international renown, the II World Tango Summit is celebrated in Granada, with the participation of more than 150 artists from cities so disparate and distant, such as New York and Kioto, Helsinki and Montevideo or Berlin and Buenos Aires.  Consequently, this summit now is transformed into an unprecedented event in the world of tango.  In Granada Town Hall, Montevideo is nominated to be the host city for the III World Tango Summit.
The astonishment and fascination of the audiences in Montevideo, on seeing and listening to unique artists from cities so far apart and that nevertheless perform traditional and new tangos as if they came from the same place, still remains in the memories of the people and in the libraries of the city.  From Montevideo, tango and its World Summit, crosses the Atlantic once again to take residence in another port city, Lisbon, in the year of its Expo in 1998.  There, Tango is again a vehicle and instrument to enable cities and their peoples interact and even to enable two musical genres, Fado and tango, to flirt discovering the exciting areas of mutual influence and through this, increasing the possibility of their respective enrichment and ulterior evolution.
Again in America, Rosario is the city which hosts, with outstanding organization, the V World Tango Summit.  The presence of more than 500 artists in theatres and on stages throughout the city represented the largest scale event connected with tango.
The city of Seville was in March 2005, the venue for the VI World Tango Summit, having the possibility to house an event where the main aim is to use tango as an instrument to intensify the relations between different and far apart cities. Tango was enjoyed in all its forms, but at the same time, the concept of an “urban cultural space” was put forward that helped, without a shadow of doubt, to understand our daily city lives….The city of Valparaíso, in Chile, was chosen in Seville as the next venue for the 2007 VII World Tango Summit.  With its sister centre in Viña del Mar, few times have we seen an event which takes over the city and its inhabitants as much as with this summit.  The last Summit took place in March 2009 in the beautiful city of Bariloche where the Finnish city Seinajoki was unanimously nominated to host the IX World Tango Summit in the month of July 2011.
